New Law means new business

The law about winter tires who hit Québec in 2008 might have after effects in the other provinces in Canada. The result of this regulation has been good so far for the tire business, as many retailers found themselves in shortage of tires. Other province’s are also considering enforcing the same law.

In the province of Quebec, storing winter or summer tires for the customer is an important trend and as it goes, the tire storage industry is taking a more important place on the Canadian  market with Maritimes and Ontario following up. Tire shops, Garages, Car dealers, Logistic Companies, Gas stations, Stores, everybody try to make profit out of that business.

Why you should store your customer's tires:

  1. Customer lock-in for the next changeover;
  2. More chances to sell the next set of new tires when your client will need some;
  3. More chances to do the maintenance/repair on their vehicle;
  4. Possibility to buy the used tires and resell them;
  5. Accommodate women and other clients who have no interest in bringing back heavy and dirty tires;
  6. Accommodate the apartment and condo market who have little or no room for seasonal tires;
  7. Possibility of a revenue for the store: cleaning, and repair for the tire and wheels.

More and more women now go to tire shops for their tire changeover. The storage service is usually a service they are interested in and appreciated. The same is true for customers living in cities with limited storage space.  In the end, the tire storage service should help you maintain customer loyalty.

Not all racks are good to use

Garages, tire shops, tire warehouses use different system to store customer tire. Tire shelving (MTS-92, MTS-924, MTS-925) and folding cages (MLTFD) are the most popular ones because the tires are on the tread making them more accessible. If you pile the tires on the floor or even piled on tire racks you will loose time for searching the customer tire and it will also be time consuming to hand bump tires to get to the one you need. This is why systems like the stacking racks (MSR-6060, MSR-7272) or like the wood frame pallets  are not ideal to store customer tires.

Tireshelving solutions for small businesses

The three different adjustable tier tire shelvings are mainly used by tire shops, car dealerships, garages or small warehouse. Those products are perfect for small quantities of tires, warehouses limited in height and the 40’ containers used for tire storage. Mobile ladders are perfect for tire picking while the three tier tire shelving doesn’t require a ladder. Renting or buying a tire storage container is a fast and easy solution to gain room for tire storage. It's important to make sure your municipality and fire department grant you permission, to avoid bad surprises. Then, the 3 tier tire shelf (MTS-92) becomes a great solution, fitting 5 perfectly on each side permitting 10 in total, which will suit 320 to 360 tires in the 40’ container. By not stacking tires in a container but placing them on shelves, you will ensure a great service to your customers, save time in manipulation and will not lose any tires due to misplacement.

Where the folding tire rack comes in handy

The passenger and light truck tire folding rack (#MLTFD) is also an ideal storage system for customer tires. The rack is two levels deep to allow you to put the same customer tires back to back and save space. This tire rack is mainly used by big tire shops, tire warehouse and third party logistics (3PL). These folding cages are manipulated with either a fork lift, a picker or with the folding cage dolly (MLTFD-D). Picking in the rack can be done either with the light truck picking cage (#MOPC-LT) or the standard light truck picking cage (#MSOPC). In both cases an order picker is required. A ladder can also be used but is it less efficient. The racks can be folded and stacked, taking less space, and placed next to the receiving docks or directly where the tire are changed.  When the tire rack are full, you should bring them to the storage area. We also have an interesting rental program (Rent-A-Rack) for these tire racks. This might be a solution for seasonal ups and downs
